"When I was little, my father died after falling from a jackfruit tree. My mother was left with ten small children, and I was the youngest. We had to make or sell something in order to eat every day. I was asked to be a dancer when I was young, but I was too shy. As I'm so interested in the arts, I decided to be a painter. I taught myself to paint and started selling paintings when I was seven years old. I still love painting, as I'm especially interested in color.
"When I was about 15, I started working in an antique shop. There I learned a lot about the different woods, and to appreciate the arts of Indonesia. Later on, I started to collect antiques from throughout Indonesia – Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Sumatra, Java, Flores, Timor and especially Bali. Our ancestors a thousand years ago made beautiful art, and luckily the techniques have been handed down so that today we can still enjoy modern or newly-made artifacts created with the old techniques and all carved by hand.
"Now I have my own workshop where I work with my family crafting nice pieces of furniture and restoring antique pieces. My goal is to acquaint people in other countries with the history of arts and crafts in Bali so that they understand more about our rich cultural heritage. My family includes musicians, silver and wood craftsmen, batik artists and dancers. In Bali, living with art is a natural part of our life."
